When AI answers repeat your arrest record

There is no takedown form for an AI answer. That is the honest starting point, and it is why the work here is different from everything else on this site.

Why this became a problem in 2026

The clearest evidence comes from a competitor. In August 2026, Erase.com's director of demand generation published an account of the shift: AI Overviews "actively surface negative reviews and criticism that traditional rankings used to keep off page one," and inbound requests specifically about negative AI Overview and assistant-answer content were up, per Erase.com, roughly 215% year over year at that firm.

The same piece contains the sentence that should end the suppression business as it is currently sold: "When the summary is the answer, position ten and position three can carry the same weight." Pushing a record to page two of Google does nothing if the summary above the results has already quoted it.

The audience shift is real too — the 2026 BrightLocal consumer survey found 45% of consumers using AI tools for local business recommendations, against a BrightLocal-reported 6% a year earlier.

What can actually be done

An AI answer is generated from sources. It has no record to delete, no form to submit, and no obligation to correct itself. So the lever is the source layer: remove or de-index the pages the model is citing, and the citation loses its footing. That is the same removal work described elsewhere on this site, aimed at a different output.

The queries that trigger these summaries are specific — a name plus "reddit", a name plus "arrest", a name plus "reviews". Those are the ones worth checking, because question-shaped searches are the ones most likely to produce a summary rather than a list of links.

Expect a lag. Even after a source is gone, an answer can keep repeating it until the model's index catches up, and no one can give you a date for that.

What we will not tell you

That we can guarantee an AI answer changes. Nobody can, and any quoted timeline for it is invented. What is possible to promise is the source work, which is measurable, and monitoring of the specific queries that surface it.

This area is also unsettled legally rather than governed. In June 2026 a German court held Google liable for false statements generated in an AI Overview — a signal that the law is moving, not a mechanism you can use today. We would rather price this honestly as source work than borrow credibility from the mugshot statutes, which have nothing to say about a generated summary.

Three different mechanisms, one symptom

When an assistant repeats something about you, one of three things is happening, and only two are fixable. The model may be reading a live page, in which case removing that page fixes it. It may be reading a cached or indexed copy that outlived the page, which is a recrawl problem and is what Google's refresh request is for. Or the claim may have been absorbed into training data, where nothing you do to any page changes the answer until the model is next trained.

Working out which one you are looking at is the first job, and it is usually visible in the answer itself: a cited link means mechanism one or two, an uncited assertion often means three.

That ordering has one consequence worth acting on, and it runs against the usual advice. Here, speed beats thoroughness. A record removed in its first months has fewer chances to be scraped into a training set. A record removed after years of syndication can keep surfacing in generated answers long after every page carrying it is dead.

Common questions

Can you get ChatGPT or Google's AI to stop mentioning my arrest?

Not directly — there is no removal request for a generated answer. The workable route is removing or de-indexing the sources it draws on, after which the citation usually stops appearing. No one can promise a date.

Does suppression still work?

Less than it did, and the industry's own reporting says so. When a summary is the answer, the difference between position three and position ten narrows. That makes actual removal more valuable than ranking work, not less.

Which searches should I check?

Your name paired with a question word or a platform — "reddit", "arrest", "reviews", "lawsuit". Those question-shaped queries are the ones that trigger summaries.
